National Yoga Month Offers More Than Just Free Yoga

Los Angeles, September 24, 2009 – Thousands of people and hundreds of charity, global peace, and health and wellness events across the country are celebrating the first official National Yoga Month as it continues throughout September 2009.   Emphasizing the message of preventative health and wellness, National Yoga Month offers a full seven days of free yoga classes at participating yoga studios from coast to coast.

Free Yoga Classes and Event during National Yoga Month September

The Yoga Health Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to yoga education, leads the National Yoga Month campaign as part of an ongoing effort to encourage more people to take steps towards improving their own health and well-being.

“Experience is a powerful teacher, so we decided to give people across the country the opportunity to try yoga for themselves,” explains Johannes Fisslinger, founder of the Yoga Health Foundation.

The result is a card valid for “One Week Free Yoga,” available to anyone who visits their website, www.yogamonth.org, which over 20,000 people have done so far.  Cards can be redeemed at hundreds of studios across the nation up until November 30, 2009.

However, the National Yoga Month campaign goes beyond encouraging people to take up their own yoga practice.  Dozens of charities, schools and community centers across the nation are reaping the benefits of yoga in the National Yoga Month Campaign.  The Yoga Health Foundation donates hundreds of Yoga-based Mind Body Fitness educational DVDs to teachers for free, reaching thousands of children to inspire them to live a healthy lifestyle.  The DVDs are divided into 15-20 interactive, classroom-friendly segments, and are available by request online.

“Considering the current budget crisis and cuts in funding especially for physical education in schools, it is more important than ever to bring affordable health and fitness education and exercise into class rooms, “ says Fisslinger.

National Yoga Month has inspired other yoga studios to make similar contributions to their communities through charity donations and events.  Three Trees Yoga & Healing Arts Center in Federal Way, Washington, Yoga Country in Brentwood, Tennessee, and RYAH Yoga & Health in Conshohocken, Pennsylvania are just three of the hundreds are participating studios who have decided to donate money raised through National Yoga Month events to local charities.

“If we can make a difference in just one person’s life, we consider our campaign a success.  We’re looking forward to growing more and more each year,” says Fisslinger.

Global Mala Yoga for Peace Project event during National Yoga Month September in support of the United Nations International Day of Peace

Yogis Throughout the World Cross the Borders of their Mats to Raise Consciousness and Funds for Important Causes.

Los Angeles, April 17, 2009 — On September 19 and 20, the Global Mala Yoga for Peace Project, whose purpose is to unite the global yoga community, will implement events throughout the world in honor of the United Nations International Day of Peace.

Forming a “mala around the earth” through collective practices based upon the sacred cycle of 108, the mission of the Global Mala Project is to raise both funds and consciousness for some of the most pressing issues facing the world today. Global Mala Yoga for Peace is a featured event series during National Yoga Month 09.2009.

Thousands of yogis will practice 108 sun salutations at hundreds of events across the nation. Taking its name, “mala”, from the sacred prayer beads used in India and Tibet as meditation guides, the Global Mala Project will benefit the Yoga Health Foundation and numerous other charities and projects that are supported by local community leaders. Composed of 108 beads, the mala is symbolic of the prayer for peace, hope and charity the Global Mala Project will be sending to the world.

“With the rising threat of Global Warming, the illusion of separateness is dissolving around the world,” said Shiva Rea, world-renowned Yoga teacher and catalyst for the Global Mala Project. “Yoga is one of the few common denominators for millions of people around the world; together we are creating a circle around the earth and dedicating our energy to peace.”

The Global Mala Yoga Project in Los Angeles, New York, Miami, San Francisco and many other cities worldwide will include 108 sun salutations, live music, and fellowship with likeminded yogis interested in creating the peace they wish to experience in the world.
