This is an important issue and even if the NYT article is not scientific and sensational, it addresses an issue that yoga teachers and students need to be aware of. Read both the NYT article and also Dr. McCall’s response which puts things into perspective. Johannes

How to Not Wreck Your Body Doing Yoga or, How I Really Feel about Headstand.
As many of you know, I was one of the people featured in the controversial New York Times Magazine article, “How Yoga Can Wreck Your Body.” I’ve had so many inquiries that I’ve decided to make my response the subject of my latest newsletter. But since many people who aren’t on my list may be interested in hearing, as one email put it, what I really think, I’m putting the article up on my web site now. The article also contains links to numerous articles I’ve written over the years on the subject of yoga injuries.

A unique and foundational element of this conference is our scholarship and sustainability program which is geared towards Jamaica’s youth workers. The intention of this program is to spread the reach of yoga related tools and skills to marginalized children in Jamaica. We are working with Paige Elenson, founder of Africa Yoga Project, and other industry leaders, to establish the framework for a sustainability program in Jamaica. CYC is also working in conjunction with Karma Krew to offer a Karma Yoga workshop at the SOS Children’s Village, an orphanage in Jamaica. Karma Krew will also be setting up a Karma Korner at the conference to allow participants the opportunity to engage in small yet meaningful karma initiatives.
Studios have taken action by providing a “Practice with Purpose” donation based class to help raise money to fund Jamaica’s Youth Workers. It takes $900 to cover one recipients expenses. Yoga for Pregnancy by Isabella Woods
As any mum to be knows, pregnancy is a time of huge highs and lows. You may be extremely happy to be pregnant, or perhaps you’re a little more daunted. But even if it’s the thing you’ve wanted to happen most in life, due to fluctuating hormones you could still find yourself feeling down in the dumps and questioning your situation.
As with all things in life, exercise can help alleviate times of mental, physical and emotional stress and provide a much-needed release. But it’s important to choose exercise that is right for you and safe to do during pregnancy. And that’s exactly where yoga steps in.
It’s important to take time out for yourself during pregnancy – as soon enough you’ll have a little one who’ll need all your attention. So, make sure you look after yourself and keep stress to a minimum at this important time in your life. Introduce yoga to your routine and you’ll learn breathing techniques, meditation and postures that will help you not just in the yoga class itself but outside in your everyday life, too.

The Big Fix features Peter Fonda and received critical acclaim earlier this year as the only Official Selection Documentary of the Cannes Film Festival.About the Feature Documentary, THE BIG FIX:

Add a Time for Yoga (or any other Yoga Month event in our global directory

National Yoga Month Goes Global

Yoga Month invites all yoga studios, teachers and students to unite on September 30 for a worldwide yoga practice. Be a part of the first annual Time for Yoga Global Community Practice by organizing a yoga practice in your own community.

At 7 p.m. local time on September 30, yoga students of all experience levels are encouraged to practice yoga as an international observance and the culmination of Yoga Month. A one-hour yoga practice will be followed by savasana beginning at 8 p.m., and a 15 minute meditation for universal peace and well-being at 8:15 p.m.

By participating during your own local time, a wave of yoga will take place around the globe.

Help Yoga Month show the world how many people have chosen to live a healthy lifestyle through yoga. Whether you are planning a large community event, an internet-led practice or an intimate session with friends, Yoga Month wants to know about all Time for Yoga celebrations so we can make a global statement. Make plans for The Time for Yoga and register them today onYogaMonth.org/events.

September is the official National Yoga Month (a national observance designated by the Department of Health & Human Services) designed to build awareness of yoga’s proven health benefits and provide people with actionable guidance and tools to enhance their own well-being. This grassroots awareness campaign inspires both youths and adults to take responsibility for their well-being by focusing on prevention and healthy lifestyle choices. In 2011, Yoga Month will actively move towards a global campaign by initiating Time for Yoga practices all over the world.
