From raising serotonin to lowering levels of stress hormones, yoga has been documented to have hundreds of discrete effects on the body and mind. Clinical research has found yoga can benefit people with dozens of different medical conditions from anxiety and attention deficit disorder to cancer and heart disease. We'll review the scientific evidence to understand the mechanisms by which yoga and yoga therapy work. In light of the growing ominance of evidence-based medicine, we will also discuss how the deck is stacked against natural remedies like yoga in favor of drug therapy in particular, and how this adversely affects our health care system. We will try out various yogic practices including asana, pranayama, chanting and meditation to illustrate various principles during this workshop.
